Mary Jean Alsina

Owner/Behavior Consultant/Award-Nominated Author
CPDT-KA, M.A

New Jersey Dog Behavior Consultant /Author, Mary Jean Alsina, Owner and Head Trainer of The Canine Cure, LLC™ has worked with dogs for over 15 years.

Mary Jean has taught many owners how to fully enjoy their relationships with their dogs and how to be more fulfilled as dog owners. In 2016, she was named one of the first worldwide 27 Accredited Professionals to earn the title of PCT-A (Professional Canine Trainer-Accredited) through the Pet Professional Accreditation Board (PPAB). She is a CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed) and she did her main studies at The Academy for Dog Trainers based in California. There, she learned the ins and outs of dog behavior and behavior modification. She is devoted to continuing education and in spite of her experience, she’s continuing her education by attending seminars, workshops, and conferences. She has worked at various animal shelters and continues to attend seminars and workshops around the country. She is certified by the AKC as a CGC evaluator, is a member of the professional organizations APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) and was a regular Dog Training Columnist for the Pet Professional Guild’s quarterly journal “Barks From The Guild”. Her book which is a must for any dog owner, “Dogs Are People Too” was released in 2016 and is available on Amazon. In December 2016, “Dogs Are People Too” was nominated for the prestigious Dog Writer’s Association Of America 2016 Annual Writing Competition.

Mary Jean also was a public school teacher for over 20 years. Having two graduate degrees in Education has been a great asset as she understands how people truly learn, as well as dogs, and can patiently guide you to learn how to work with your dog to the best of your ability. Many times dog trainers seem to be “the only one the dog will behave for.” Mary Jean will show you that is simply not true. You CAN get your dog to understand what you want from them.

Mary Jean’s teaching experience also allows her to specialize in training for the whole family. It is so helpful to have everyone in the home on board for the training and behavior modification of the dog. This sets your dog up for a higher and faster rate of success. She strongly feels that dogs learn best when in a relaxed, positive environment. Using fear and scaring a dog in an attempt to get him to learn can be quite harmful, and is not effective in the long run, as it can cause other long-term fear and aggression problems. Dogs do not learn well with constant corrections. When trained this way, they never learn what IS expected of them. She teaches your dog what they should do, not simply what you don’t want them to do. You and your dog will be much happier this way. Choosing a behavior consultant with an EDUCATION in dog behavior is quite important because anyone can say that they are “good with dogs” because they had dogs all their life. That does not mean that they understand the intricacies of how dogs learn and think. Knowing the SCIENCE behind how dogs learn is crucial to a successful behavior consultant. Mary Jean has that background and can help you achieve the behavior and the relationship you’ve been missing with your dog.
